DIY Mini Fodder Rack
Growing your own fodder is easy with this little rack! It is built from scraps of 1" x 2" cage wire. This rack is designed to hold eight 6.5" x 5.5" x 2"H plastic trays. We used the reusable containers that lunch meat comes in. You may need to adjust the size of the rack if your trays are a different size. We keep our rack on the counter by the sink, so watering is a breeze!
Cut the following pieces from cage wire:
six 6" x 11" pieces (sides & shelves) one 10" x 11" piece (back) The finished rack measures 11" wide x 6" deep x 11" high Use J-clips or zip ties to attach two 6" x 11" pieces to the 10" sides of the 10" x 11" piece (raise the back piece 1" from the bottom). Attach the lowest shelf 1" up from the bottom. Attach the next shelf 3" above the first (or 4" from the bottom of the side piece). Attach the third shelf 7" up. Install the final shelf 10" from the bottom. If you did it correctly, the top shelf will be sitting 1" below the top rim. File any rough edges & your mini fodder rack is complete! |
This rack produces enough supplemental fodder for 4-6 large rabbits. If you are looking for a bigger system, check out the DIY Fodder System for Animals on the Prairie Homestead blog and How to Grow Fodder by Deb Bixler.
